Pizza Party

Home made pizza is the best!

Once again we had a bunch of hungry teenagers over at the house and instead of ordering greasy pizza, we had our own home made pizza party. It was a lot less expensive, a lot more fun, a lot tastier, and a lot better for them. You don’t even need a recipe, just a little imagination. Here’s what we did…

We started with three of Trader Joe’s fresh whole wheat pizza dough packages. These are great. They cost about $2. They come in white, whole wheat and I think a garlic-herb variety. Just dump them out onto a light floured surface and let sit for 20 minutes to rest. Then stretch or roll — I find stretching easier — to your desired shape. We had one round, one rectangular, and one — I swear — trapezoid (not by design). Then, layer on your goodies and pop in the oven at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and the crust browned. Our pizzas were:

Pizza #1 – Pesto sauce, sun dried tomatoes and goat cheese
Pizza #2 – Roasted red pepper-tomato sauce, turkey basil sausage and goat cheese
Pizza #3 – Traditional tomato sauce and half cheese, half turkey sausage and cheese

Keep in mind that you don’t have to have a pizza stone, although they do make them nice and crisp on the bottom. We had one just on a cookie sheet that I lightly floured. As the weather gets nicer, you can always put the stone on the BBQ as well. It gives it a really nice smokey flavor.
